Home Going Celebration Mildred "Millie" Horton

| 8/12/04 To the Family of Mrs..
Horton, I am writing this to express my gratitude for having met Mrs. Horton. She was a unique and caring woman that I will never forget. I met her when I was 15, at 16 I left Erie and never saw her again. Over twenty years later, I still remember her well. Today I felt moved to do an internet search on Gannondale School for Girls. This is because I was forced to live there for almost two years of my life. I found the page in memory of Mrs. Horton. One thing for sure about living there was that it was horrific. The worst time of my life in fact. The one person that made it tolerable was Mrs.. Horton. She treated me, and the rest of the girls as human beings. A real treat in that place, we all respected her for it. Unlike any other staff that worked there, I trusted her. She always worked at night and we would wait for her arrival. We knew that when she was there, wrongs would be fixed and personal issues could be discussed with total confidentiality. She held a position amongst the girls that no one else could come close to. She earned that respect and we loved her. Mrs.. Horton was a very compassionated person. She seemed to understand the pain I was in to great depths and the only one who cared enough to try. It was as if God had put her in my life to save my sanity. She influenced me greatly and I will never forget the things she did for me. Mrs.. Horton lives on in my memories. I miss her and am grateful that she was a part of my life. Sincerely, Brenda Evanoff |
